Strategic HR advisory
People decisions seen next to strategy, cost, capability and execution.
For CEOs, CHROs and senior people leaders facing a people decision with business consequence.
Some questions are not best held as coaching. When the organization needs perspective on a people decision with business consequence, the useful mode is advisory—named as such, with a clear contract.

What is strategic HR advisory?
Strategic HR advisory is named perspective for CEOs, CHROs and people leaders when a people decision has business consequence—at the point where talent, succession, capability and execution meet strategy and cost. It is not coaching under another name, and it is not outsourced operational HR support.
The work may include clarifying the real trade-off, testing whether a problem is individual, systemic or both, and helping a leadership group think more usefully about talent, succession, performance or organization design.
Who is strategic HR advisory for?
- 01CEOs and business leaders facing a people decision with material consequence.
- 02CHROs and senior HR leaders who want a thinking partner with both coaching depth and organizational experience.
- 03Leadership teams that need better dialogue on a people question, without pretending the work is confidential coaching.
When is strategic HR advisory useful?
- 01Succession is being treated as an emergency after a resignation, rather than as work that should have started earlier.
- 02A capability, cost or structure question is being discussed as if it were only a personality issue.
- 03Internal mobility, talent review or growth paths are unclear, and the organization is losing people it wanted to keep.
- 04A people decision will affect execution, and the organization needs a clearer view of the trade-off it is actually making.
What it is not
- 01It is not a substitute for coaching when the client needs a confidential thinking space of their own.
- 02It is not legal, compensation-benchmarking or outsourced HR operations support.
- 03The central need is therapy, legal advice or specialist expertise outside the agreed scope of practice.
How the engagement starts
A discovery conversation clarifies the decision, the stakeholders and whether advisory work, coaching or facilitation is the right mode.
If there is a fit, the proposed scope names the question, the form of the work, responsibilities and fees. Advice is given only when expertise and organizational context are explicitly part of the contract.
A named mode, not a blurred one
Coach, advisor and facilitator are different jobs. Advisory work is explicit: a perspective, challenge or recommendation is offered because that is what was agreed, not because coaching quietly turned into consulting.
Why this practice
Mehdi’s advisory perspective is grounded in 14 years in HR within 17 years of organizational experience, including HR strategy, organization design, leadership and capability development, talent and succession, and performance—through growth, change and organizational complexity.
The ICF PCC coaching discipline still matters here: diagnosis is slowed, claims stay traceable, and the organization is not offered invented outcomes.
Questions before we begin
- What is strategic HR advisory?
- Named advisory—not coaching—for CEOs, CHROs and people leaders when a people decision has business consequence. It sits at the point where a human decision meets strategy, cost, capability and execution.
- When might a CEO, CHRO or people leader use it?
- When a people decision carries material consequence and the organization needs clearer perspective—for example succession treated as an emergency, a capability or structure question misread as personality, unclear internal mobility, or a trade-off that will affect execution.
- How is strategic HR advisory different from coaching?
- Coaching protects a confidential thinking space where the client owns the direction. Advisory is explicit: a perspective, challenge or recommendation is offered because expertise and organizational context are part of the contract. The modes are named rather than mixed.
- What kinds of questions does this advisory typically cover?
- Evidence-backed scope from senior HR practice includes HR strategy, organization design, leadership and capability development, talent and succession, and performance—seen next to operating reality. It is not legal advice, compensation benchmarking or outsourced HR operations.
- What is a discovery conversation?
- A first conversation to understand the situation, explore what you are trying to change and see whether working together makes sense. The aim is fit and clarity, not an early sales decision.
